Mental Illness Stigma Hurts Like Racism


Hey, want to share a little something about this photo. I took this of myself to try and see my face and see what suicide compulsion looked like.

This is that photo. I posted it on Facebook, curious of if it’s visible to others.

Interesting many responses (not just on FB) were to smile.

I’m battling for my life — an invisible war. it’s brutal and I’ll be honest, almost didn’t make that round — and the response is to smile. This was a point a 5150 crisis call was long overdue and appropriate.

We have a huge gap of understanding a crisis and recognizing when a person is in crisis.
Smiles are something girls are conditioned to do — regardless of how they feel. Essentially telling them feelings are not meant to be expressed or open.

Just something to ponder.
